- Organisations requiring large-area mapping and monitoring solutions
Course Structure
The programme will begin by exploring the unique aerodynamics and flight characteristics of fixed-wing drones. Students will then compare fixed-wing platforms to multirotor systems, understanding their advantages in terms of endurance, coverage, and operational efficiency. We’ll also help you get familiar with different makes and models of fixed-wing UAVs designed for surveying, agriculture, and environmental monitoring.
You’ll learn how to effectively plan flights for maximum coverage and data resolution. Gain insights into selecting optimal flight altitudes, setting appropriate overlaps, and determining flight paths that minimize dead zones. We’ll help you understand how to utilise mission planning software specific to fixed-wing platforms for precise, large-scale mapping and monitoring tasks.
You’ll master the art of safely launching and recovering fixed-wing drones, whether by hand-launch, catapult systems, or runway-style take-offs. This module will also cover best practices in pre-flight checks, environmental considerations (wind, terrain), and emergency procedures to ensure smooth operations from launch to landing.
You’ll delve into the various sensors and payloads commonly integrated into fixed-wing drones, such as high-resolution RGB cameras, multispectral sensors, LiDAR units, or thermal imagers. Learn how to select, calibrate, and optimize these payloads for the mission requirements, ensuring that data quality and accuracy meet professional standards.
You’ll put your knowledge into action by conducting field missions and collecting imagery or sensor data. Learn proper data handling techniques, from on-site data validation to structured file management. Finally, explore post-processing workflows using mapping software or analytics platforms to convert raw data into useful orthomosaics, NDVI maps, elevation models, and other value-added deliverables.
