Inside Dubai’s New Drone Testing Zone: How FEDS and the University of Dubai Are Building the Future

Ever wondered where drone pilots learn to fly? It’s not enough to read a manual; you need space to practise. That’s why the University of Dubai and FEDS Drone Academy have teamed up to create a dedicated drone testing zone on a university campus in Dubai.

With a newly issued permit from the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, they can now set aside roughly 300 square metres of campus for training, testing and research. Here’s what that means for students, the drone industry and the wider community.

Why a dedicated zone matters

Drones are powerful tools, but they need skilled operators and rigorous testing to be safe and useful. By carving out a “sandbox” inside the campus, the partners can:

  • Run certified training programmes: Students gain hands‑on experience with enterprise drones and learn the rules and best practices that keep operations safe.
  • Test new systems and technologies: The zone allows live experiments with different aircraft and payloads without leaving campus.
  • Encourage research and innovation: Students and faculty can conduct scientific and applied research on unmanned systems, exploring how drones can serve sectors like construction, agriculture and public safety.
  • Grow local expertise: Training more pilots and researchers helps the UAE build a workforce ready to harness advanced technologies.

Voices from the collaboration

FEDS Group CEO Rabih Bou Rached believes that real progress in the drone sector depends on cooperation between regulators, academia and industry. “Sustainable progress comes when regulators, universities and operators come together,” he says. By working with the University of Dubai, FEDS hopes to create a sandbox where pilots can train and researchers can explore new applications and data analysis techniques.

For UD, the collaboration fits squarely within its mission of community service and future-oriented learning. The university is investing in drone training to serve society and the local economy, and to keep pace with rapid technological change. By increasing the number of qualified pilots and encouraging research, the partners are not only helping students but also enabling government and industry to invest their resources more effectively.

Looking ahead

Drone technology evolves quickly. With the new testing zone and the UD–FEDS partnership, Dubai now has a safe, structured environment to nurture that evolution. Over the coming months, the partners will roll out training sessions, research projects and community events that invite students and stakeholders into the world of unmanned aircraft. The goal is clear: build a local talent pool and drive innovation that benefits the UAE.
